Sewing Excitement and Sleepover Ensemble Extravaganza

July 19, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Ten middle school girls and I had a big week at Millwood School Summer Program!  I was very impressed with their attention and behavior, and they were excited about learning to sew.  We focused on hand sewing the first two days, then worked with the machines for the next three.  They now have an introduction to the skill, and hopefully this Summer they will continue their learning.

My thanks to Whitney Watson, Summer Program Coordinator, for giving me this opportunity.

A Visit with Matisse

June 21, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Last Thursday I presented a program on Matisse for the Assisted Living area of Covenant Woods.  For our Visit with Matisse, we briefly reviewed his long and prolific life as an artist, watched a slide show of his work – focusing on his paper cut outs, and then did cut outs of our own with Matisse’s Icarus as a model.  Everyone participated and had a good time!

This is part of Dan Springs’ Traditional Art Preservation Program.  Similar Visits with Artists are available as shown in the TAPP area of this website.  If you’re interested in scheduling one for your group or facility, give us a call!

Sewing Excitement – Millwood School

May 8, 2009 · Leave a Comment

May 22 is the registration deadline for the Summer Programs at Millwood School!  As you may remember from an earlier post, I’m scheduled to teach a sewing class twice during that program – once the week of July 13th and again the week of July 20th.  We’ll be making a sleepover ensemble, but before we start on that we’ll do a few introductory projects as shown above:  a journal for tracking the week’s experience; a pincushion and needle book – essentials for and seamstress; and a simple bag for storing sewing notions!

If you’re a rising 5th to 8th grader, or have a child or grandchild in that age range, check out the Millwood School site at http://www.millwoodschool.org/podium/default.aspx?t=41371

Sewing Excitement: Summer Sleepover Ensemble is listed under The Arts.  Hope to see you in July!

Visit with Grandma Moses

September 18, 2008 · Leave a Comment

This week Cathy presented Visit with Grandma Moses at Covenant Woods in Mechanicsville, Virginia.  This is a retirement community with multiple levels of care.  (for more information on Covenant Woods, see http://www.covenantwoods.com/) Most of the students this week were from assisted care.

As with the other 10 ‘Visit’ classes in this art appreciation series, Cathy first gave a brief lecture on the artist, followed by a slide show of their work, and then a hands-on art activity in artist’s style.  The object of the hour and a half session is to gain some familiarity with the artist, and have a good time!

Programs are also available for the following artists:
Eugene Boudin (1824 – 1898)
Edgar Degas (1824 – 1917)
Claude Monet (1841-1919)
Grandma Moses (1860 – 1961)
Henri Matisse (1869-1954)
Pablo Picasso (1881-1973)
Edward Hopper (1882-1967)
Georgia O’Keeffe (1887-1986)
Norman Rockwell (1894-1978)
Andrew Wyeth (1917 – )
David Hockney (1937- )
